Tartu, Estonia/tartu010old buildingPrevious | Home | NextThe University of Dorpat (now called the University of Tartu, or Tartu Ülikool in native Estonian) was the second university founded in the Swedish empire by Gustavus Adolphus II (after Uppsala, Sweden, {LINK to Uppsala} and before Åbo, Finland {Link to Åbo}). The university, originally named "Academia Dorpatensis," was founded in 1632. After a tortuous and intermittent history, the university was reopened in 1802 by Alexander I of Russia. The language used at the university during the period 1802-1893 was German. The building shown here is the main university building, dating from the early 19th century. This aquatint was created by by August Matthias Hagen (1794-1878) in 1827-1828, the same time as Osann’s studies on crude platinum residues. The chemical laboratory was located in this building 1809-1950. The view is southward, along Ülikooli street. |
